Answers:
What is Desktop IRIS?
Desktop IRIS is a desktop application that lets you search the contents of files and your Outlook e-mail.
What are the system requirements for Desktop IRIS?
Desktop IRIS support both Windows XP and Vista. Click here to view more in depth System Requirements.
How do I get and install Desktop IRIS?
Visit the Download page on this site and click on the Download link.
How do I run Desktop IRIS?
Double-click on the Desktop IRIS icon that was placed on the desktop by the installation process.
What file types are supported by Desktop IRIS?
Desktop IRIS knows how to extract text from Microsoft Word (DOC) , Microsoft Excel (XLS), Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT), Adobe Acrobat (PDF) , web pages (HTML, XML), Microsoft Wordpad (RTF), OpenOffice.org Writer (ODT), OpenOffice.org Impress (ODP), OpenOffice.org Calc (ODS), plain text (TXT) files, and many other file formats.
How do I search my indexed content?
On the Search screen, enter your search term in the text field in the top-left corner of the screen and then press the Enter key or click on the button with the magnifying glass. This will start a search against all repositories. The search results will display on the right side of the screen. A tree containing the results will display on the left side of the screen; you can restrict the displayed search results to just one directory by selecting the appropriate folder in the results tree.
How do I change the sort order of my search results?
Select a different option from the "Sort" field on the Search screen. The available options are: file size, name, file type, relevance and file date.
How do I change the number of search results per page?
At the top of the Search screen, select a different option from the "Results / Page" field.
How do I open a search result document?
You can double-click on a search result to open the file or e-mail. The application used to open the file will be the default application for the file's type (extension) for your operating system.
Are there other options for handling a search result document?
Yes! You can view the file contents as just text. This is faster than opening the file using the default application, but the text will lose any formatting. You can also open the file's folder, or copy information about the file to the clipboard: the file's name, the full file path, or the file itself.
How do I page through the search results?
At the top of the search results, on the Search screen, are four buttons
for paging through the search results. Here's what they each mean:
![]() | Go to the first page |
![]() | Go to the previous page |
![]() | Go to the next page |
![]() | Go to the last page |
Can Desktop IRIS automatically re-index content for me?
Yes! Set the index schedule to daily, weekly, or automatic. If Desktop IRIS is running at the time, it will automatically begin updating the search index.
What is the Web Crawler?
The web crawler is a tool that will download a web site to your computer. This will automatically create searchable content linked to the website, while allowing you to quickly search its content.
How do I download a website?
On the Websites screen, click on the "Create Websites" button. On the dialog box, enter a name for the job and the URL of the site you want to download. Additional properties of the crawl job can be set via the Options section. If you're not sure about these properties, the default values are usually good enough.
How do I change the result set to only show documents, pictures, etc?
The filter toolbar, located above the search result window, contains filters for common file types, including audio, documents, Internet, picture and video. You can click on one or more buttons on this toolbar to only show certain types of search results. To show all search results, click on the "All" button on the toolbar.
How do I pause the indexing service?
The index process may be paused through the right-click menu that is accessible from the task tray icon.
Can Desktop IRIS only index my files when the computer is idle?
Yes! Right-click on the Desktop IRIS icon in the system tray, and then select Indexing Options | Index Only When Idle from the pop-up menu. By default, this feature is turned off, causing Desktop IRIS to always index your files. If you prefer to have your files indexed only when the computer is idle, then you can select the menu item and it'll keep Desktop IRIS from slowing down your work, but it can cause your files to require more time before they are available for searching. We recommend not using this feature since Desktop IRIS is optimized to always index your files without causing any noticeable effect on your computer. You can also access this option by selecting the Tools | Options menu item from the application.
